Sourwood Public House, a new restaurant, plans to open at 14810 Detroit Avenue, the storefront Deagan’s Kitchen & Bar occupied for 13 years.

Lakewood City Council will consider its liquor permit application on Monday, October 5. On Thursday, October 8, the city’s design and sign review boards will look at its plans for new signs and changes to the front of the building.

The company behind it describes Sourwood as serving “Southern cuisine with global influences.” A rendering filed with the city shows the upper floor painted navy with cream trim, a dark metal awning in place of the green one, a hanging Sourwood sign, window boxes, sidewalk tables and a valet stand. An early menu on the restaurant’s website includes fried chicken with gochujang barbecue sauce, blackened catfish with red beans and rice and crawfish étouffée, shrimp and grits, and catfish tacos with jicama slaw. Entrees run $19 to $26. No opening date has been announced.

Sourwood Public House Lakewood LLC was registered with the state on August 31 by Bryan Pellegrino of Aurora. Its sign permit application names Leo Hines of Public House Hospitality Group.

Rather than get a new liquor permit, the company is taking over an existing one for beer, wine and liquor from Sunset Bar & Grill in Ripley, near Cincinnati, and moving it to Lakewood. Lakewood City Council has until October 15 to object to the transfer and ask the state for a hearing.

Three businesses have closed in the space since 2023. Deagan’s closed that year, and partners who bought the business from owner Dan Deagan reopened it as Solstice, which lasted about a year. Deagan came back with The Arcade on Detroit in April 2025, and it closed early this year, Cleveland Scene reported.
