Ideastream adds five reporters to local newsroom

Ideastream Public Media, the Cleveland nonprofit that runs public radio station WKSU at 89.7 FM and public television station WVIZ, added five journalists to its newsroom. It announced them on September 4. Four are new hires. One is returning.

Sean McDonnell takes Cleveland City Hall and Cuyahoga County. He covered the same building for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, and reported earlier for the Akron Beacon Journal and the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram. He lives in Berea.

Amanda Pirani is a regional reporter and producer covering Summit County, which includes Akron. She reported on Ohio’s Appalachian counties for WOUB, a public media station in Athens, through Report for America, which places journalists in local newsrooms. She lives in Kent.

Ida Lieszkovszky returns to cover health. She has worked in Ohio print and broadcast for about seventeen years, including education for the NPR project StateImpact Ohio and the county courts for cleveland.com.

Ella Abbott joins the regional team covering Akron and nearby communities. She grew up in Cleveland and returns from WBOI, a public radio station in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Jeff St. Clair, WKSU’s midday host for years, moves to a full-time science beat covering research, medicine, energy and the outdoors. He announced the change himself on August 27.
